In the evening, head to the beachside strip for fresh seafood — grilled seer fish, prawns, and jumbo crabs are local favourites.

After breakfast, begin the scenic drive into Sri Lanka's spectacular Hill Country. As you ascend from the coastal lowlands, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of misty mountains, waterfalls, and lush greenery. Your first stop is Gampola, gateway to the highlands. From here, take an exhilarating tuk-tuk ride up to the iconic Ambuluwawa Tower — a unique 48-metre spiral tower rising above a biodiversity complex, offering breathtaking 360° panoramic views of mountains, forests, and valleys stretching to the horizon. The tower also houses shrines representing Sri Lanka's four major religions, making it a symbol of cultural harmony. Continue to Nawalapitiya, where you'll discover the Galpoththa Natural Water Slide — a stunning hidden gem where smooth granite rocks form a natural waterslide into crystal-clear pools. Today's journey is one of the world's most celebrated train rides. Board the Colombo–Badulla express and prepare to be mesmerised as the train winds through emerald tea estates, misty mountain passes, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic valleys for approximately 4 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous Nine Arches Bridge as you approach Ella. This colonial-era stone viaduct, framed by lush jungle, is one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks — and seeing it from the train is truly unforgettable. Upon arrival in Ella, check in to your hotel and explore the lively main street packed with cafés, restaurants, and local shops. In the evening, catch the golden-hour light over the valley from a rooftop café.

Spend a full day discovering why Ella is the crown jewel of Sri Lanka's highlands. Start your morning early with the hike up Little Adam's Peak — a relatively easy 45-minute trek rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across a patchwork of tea plantations and mountain ridges. The sunrise from the top is exceptional. After descending, visit Ravana Falls, one of Sri Lanka's widest and most dramatic waterfalls, and a sacred site connected to the ancient Ramayana legend. The falls plunge 25 metres into a natural pool — ideal for photography and cooling off. In the afternoon, walk the jungle trail to the Nine Arches Bridge for up-close views. Arugam Bay is consistently ranked among the top surf destinations in the world, and its laid-back, sun-soaked vibe is infectious from the moment you arrive. Check in to your beach accommodation, grab a fresh coconut, and put your feet in the sand. Spend the afternoon exploring the bay — rent a bicycle to cruise along the coastal road, visit the lagoon, or simply unwind after days of highland adventure. As the sun dips below the horizon, join the surfers and travellers at a beachside bar for sundowners.

Today is all about the ocean. Arugam Bay's main point break is one of Asia's finest, drawing professional surfers from around the globe. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a complete beginner, today offers the perfect opportunity to get on a board. The "Baby Point" at the southern end of the bay is ideal for beginners and younger guests, with gentler waves and lifeguards on duty. The main break serves intermediate to advanced surfers with powerful, long-running right-hand waves. Several surf schools along the beach offer 2-hour beginner lessons including board and instructor — most guests are standing on the board by the end of their first session. For experienced surfers, board rental is readily available. Arrive at your Yala safari camp or lodge in time for lunch and a rest before the afternoon. Yala National Park is home to the highest concentration of leopards in the world, along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo, hundreds of bird species, and much more. In the late afternoon, take an optional short game drive along the park boundary to get your bearings and catch the spectacular Yala sunset over the lagoon — a golden-hour moment that is simply unforgettable. Enjoy dinner at your lodge under a sky full of stars, with the sounds of the jungle all around.

Rise before dawn for the most magical experience of your trip. The Yala gates open at 6AM, and the early morning hours are when wildlife is most active. Board your open-top jeep with an expert tracker and naturalist guide, and head deep into Block 1 of the park. Yala has one of the world's highest leopard densities — your chances of a sighting are excellent. An action-packed final full day combining two of Sri Lanka's greatest experiences — whale watching and the UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort. Rise early for your whale watching boat departure from Mirissa harbour at approximately 6:30AM. Mirissa is one of the best places on Earth to see blue whales — the largest animals ever to have lived on our planet. Spinner dolphins, sperm whales, and flying fish are common companions on the voyage. The 3–4 hour excursion returns to harbour by mid-morning. After freshening up, drive 30 minutes west along the coast to the magnificent Galle Dutch Fort — a remarkably well-preserved 17th-century colonial fortification and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend 2–3 hours wandering cobblestone streets lined with Dutch colonial architecture, boutique shops, art galleries, and superb restaurants. Walk the fort ramparts for panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and watch the sunset paint the sky (if your timing allows). Then begin the 3.5-hour drive north along the Expressway back to Negombo for your final night before departure.

Your final morning in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.
